One Stone, Two Birds! Implementing Mindfulness and Growing Peace & Proficiency in a Language Classroom
The importance and benefits of mindfulness on increasing students’ focus and attention, enhancing one’s cognitive function, reducing stress and raising overall well-being have been widely discussed and accepted.  When mindfulness is implemented in a classroom, it builds a harmonious community and enhance a better relationship among each other.  However, many people perceive mindfulness practice as something unreachable, and how to make them work in a classroom is a myth.
In this session, the presenter will lead each participant through 12 easy mindfulness practices all in target language; effective strategies on how to integrate them successfully in your own classroom will be shared, especially, in a novice level class.  Tips on how to use different mindfulness activities for classroom management will be shared.
Participants will personally navigate through peace and calmness, as well as excitement and mental alertness.  These exercises will help participants to build a safe learning environment for their students.  It will also help everyone to create a more peaceful world around us.

What Educational Leaders Should Know About TPRS
Richard Baker's (2017) dissertation identified 16 common lived experiences of teachers using TPRS and 12 obstacles they encountered which influenced some language teachers to limit or abandon its use. Unfortunately, some Teachers and Administrators who were unaware of the extensive research that supports using TPRS have actually become obstacles or resistance to teachers hoping to use it in their teaching. This presentation informs Educators and Educational Leaders on what they should know about TPRS to better prepare them to lead, follow, or at least get out of the way of good teaching.  Richard will present at Bryce Hedstrom's Administrators' Workshop on Tuesday and at his own Friday morning session.
TPRS is a theoretically informed, evidence-based, research-based, research-validated, highly effective methodological approach for promoting second language acquisition (SLA) in real classrooms. The TPRS method has proven to be effective in a variety of school settings for promoting fluency and proficiency, with many different age groups, and at several levels and contexts of instruction.  Richard also will have a Research Poster Table set up at the Exhibitor displays on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. where you may stop by to discuss your own experiences with TPRS.  Dr. Baker will also participate in the Researcher Rountable, moderated by Dr. Karen Lichtman (who served on his dissertation committee) on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. where he will discuss his previous and future research projects and how you can become involved in those studies or perhaps discuss how to conduct your own study.
Those interested may download their own free electronic copy of Baker's (2017) dissertation, which was a qualitative research study, a list of studies supporting TPRS, and a copy of his Research Study Poster handout simply by clicking on the pdf file(s) below.

Picture Talk: From Community Building to Developing Fluency
Picture Talk is a very powerful Comprehensible Input technique that can give you a break from the stories, while still keeping your input comprehensible and engaging. Picture Talk can allow you to explore different topics, introduce new concepts and vocabulary before reading a class novel, and most importantly, it is a great way to build a strong class community. In this workshop you will learn the different ways you can do a Picture Talk in your class, including setting up the foundations for developing community through pictures. This technique allows students to learn about each other, and in higher levels, it allows you to tackle difficult topics that require reflection and discussion. It is a great technique to prepare students for the IB oral exam and the debates they have to face in more advanced settings.
